Woman presides over parliament

A woman today presided over the Afghan parliament for the first time in history.

Deputy Parliament Head Fouzia Kofi’s presidency at the ultra-conservative parliament dominated by former mojahedin leaders marks an unprecedented revolution.

Afghan women have suffered unique hardship over the past decades. They have almost always been denied their basic rights. With the exception of the communist-backed regime in 1980s, women have never had presence in socio-political arena.

This move is therefore an encouraging step to promote women’s equal rights and participation in political sphere. It demonstrates a fundamentally positive change in radically religious figures’ attitudes towards women.

WOW! It sure is revolution for the good. I feel so elated just reading this. It is an admirable step cos the fact that the ultra-conservative parliment has made a choice to change- willingly/ unwillingly- thats a very brave thing to do esp when you have to change opinions to that degree. Now we have to hope that the women will take courage to participate with no shadow of doubt and hope they wll be allowed to exercise their powers to the full extent.
Nice blog you have here Ahmed. Thanks for droppin by my blog. :) and keep dropping in. :)

A credit to the new government..I think especially the matriarchal way our families often are..I am sure a woman could knock heads around far better than a man!

We are all trying to pretend that we let women and young generations in the higher positions but do we really accept it in our society...it is not that there are ultra conservatives, it is our society...we do need to bring some changes..and for sure it is a good start..but we need a long way to go so please accept my suggestion that w e DO NEED COMPREHINSIVE EDUCATION SYSTEM. Sorry for not being able to write in details due lack of time....Raf
