I was taken aback too, though there is a grain of truth to most of his portrayal. The situation, however is quite complex. There is for instance the headache of how Afghan and Pushtoon nationalism has mingled with pan-Islamic causes that suite Pakistan and Saudi Arabia greater geo-strategic visions. They will insist this is entirely co-incidental, but that it is not. David Loyn somehow misses the point on this.
